When you hear about the Memphis Grizzlies, normally Z Bo, Marc Gasol or the recently traded Rudy Gay were the first players who pop up in the conversation. Rightfully so because they were the centerpiece’s to the masses who don’t pay attention to the Grizz on a day to day basis. With the newfound attention that the mid market Grizz have been show some love by the media but it seems like their steady eddie point guard Mike Conley never gets his just do.
This year is the second year that Conley has held his own against Chris Paul in a head to head matchup during the entire series. This is no small feat CP3 is arguably the best point guard in the league, this year it isn’t much of an argument not even from me (A Pure D Will Fan) but Conley gets on a night in and night out basis to not much fan fare. During the playoffs Conley has scored when needed, gotten his teammates involved when needed, limited turnovers and picked a few pockets. During the first 5 games he’s averaging 16.2 ppg, 8.6 apg and 1.4 spg.
After his rookie season, Conley improved his game vastly, mainly fixing his outside shot. With getting a consistent outside shot and the supporting cast growing as well the Grizzlies have been a dark horse in the last few years in the playoffs. Conley hasn’t won many awards or received many if any accolades while he’s been in the NBA but the more you watch him on a daily basis you understand that he is the engine to the car that is the Grizzlies. Without a good engine your car won’t last long, at the age of 25 there isn’t much wear and tear on engine so the Grizz are in a good position.
Give Brother Mike some props y’all because this man is putting in work on the low and it seems like nobody wants to recognize him. Conley we notice the work you have been putting in the last few years and we salute you. Good luck to the Grizzlies the rest of these playoffs as they currently have the Clippers on the ropes.
