The road unkind as ECU upset the Bearcats, 73-71

After being the breaks off of Tulane on Wednesday 93-61 claiming their first win of the New Year and of conference play they travel down to ECU for their first road conference game of the season. Right now the Bearcats are rolling, but they can’t play down to their competition especially on the road.

Early in the game the Bearcats jumped out to a 9-0 lead fueled by the great play of senior guard Justin Jenifer. They even pushed it up to 13-5 and that’s when the Pirates went on a 21-4 run that put the Bearcats in for a real road battle. ECU took a 36-27 lead into the half.

In the second half it was a lot of back and forth, but ECU kept the pressure on the Bearcats. It was a foul called on Nysier Brooks that when the replay was shown it was clear it was on Seth LeDay, LeDay got the foul, but they couldn’t reverse the Brooks foul microcosm of their day. At the end of the game the Jarron Cumberland was fouled on his final attempt, but the 15 turnovers committed and shooting 8-of-18 from the line did the Bearcats in.

Four Bearcats had double digits led by Cumberland with 18 points, Brooks with 15 points, Keith Williams with 13 points and Tre Scott with 12 points.

This is a game that could’ve been prevented, but as bad as the Bearcats played they only lost by two points. At the end of the Pirates shot 9-of-22 from three and this team only makes slightly over four a game. This team is young overall so road wins will be difficult at times, but they will get better don’t panic.

Bearcats are now 12-3 overall and 1-1 in the AAC. Thursday they will play Tulsa on the road to see if they can get back on track.
