The University of Cincinnati Department of Athletics will extend its current football attendance protocols through the USF game on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2020, Director of Athletics John Cunningham announced Thursday.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, no fans have been allowed in the stadium on game days except for immediate family members of players and coaches from Cincinnati and its opponents. Limited numbers of UC’s spirit groups from band, cheer, dance and the Bearcat mascot are socially distanced in the stands but not performing on field. A small contingent of UC’s Air Force and Army ROTC cadets will be in the stands on Saturday, Sept. 26 when UC faces Army West Point.
UC will reevaluate the possibility of fans in the stands following the USF game for the final three home football games of the season against American Athletic Conference foes Memphis, Houston and ECU.
“We have extended a difficult decision to not allow fans into the stands for our first three home football games,” Cunningham said. “We still feel strongly about our obligation to our campus and to the City of Cincinnati and surrounding areas to mitigate the risk of community spread of the Coronavirus. We will continue to evaluate the spread of the virus on our campus and in our community and will make future decisions about our final three home games, in consultation with University, city and state authorities. For now, cheer on the Bearcats from your home and keep looking for more interactive opportunities with our football team and gameday staff like the Mike’s Car Wash Virtual Fan Experience.”
The Bearcats opened the season with a 55-20 win over Austin Peay on Sept. 19 in Nippert Stadium. RB Gerrid Doaks (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central) earned a spot on the American Athletic Conference weekly honor roll after scoring four touchdowns (three rushing, one receiving) and had a team-high 84 all-purpose yards in the Bearcats opener.
UC returns to the field Saturday, facing No. 22 Army West Point at 3:30 p.m. ET inside Nippert Stadium. The game will air on ESPN with radio coverage on 102.7 WEBN FM and Sirius XM 81.
