Bearcats HC Luke Fickell named 2020 Werner Ladder AFCA FBS Region 1 Coach Of The Year

University of Cincinnati Head Coach Luke Fickell was named the 2020 Werner Ladder AFCA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) Region 1 Coach of the Year. Fickell and the other winners will be honored during a virtual AFCA Convention on Tuesday, January 12, 2021. 

Fickell, in his fourth year at Cincinnati, took home his first Regional honor. The 8-0 Bearcats are ranked in the Top-10 of all three national polls and are playing host to the 2020 American Athletic Conference Championship Game on Saturday, Dec. 19 at 8 p.m. ET inside Nippert Stadium.  

He is 34-13 at UC with back-to-back 11-win seasons in 2018 and 2019, two-straight appearances in the AAC Championship Game and consecutive bowl wins in the Military (2018) and Birmingham (2019) bowls.

The AFCA recognizes five regional Coach of the Year winners in each of the Association’s five divisions: Football Bowl Subdivision, Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III and NAIA. The winners are selected by Active members of the Association who vote for coaches in their respective regions and divisions.

Region 2 honors went to Coastal Carolina’s Jamey Chadwell. Indiana’s Tom Allen (Region 3), Doc Holliday from Marshall (Region 4) and San José State’s Brent Brennan (Region 5) were the other FBS honorees.

The AFCA will announce the 2020 Werner Ladder AFCA FBS National Coach of the Year on Tuesday, January 12 during the virtual AFCA Convention. The Regional winners are finalists for National Coach of the Year.
