The Bearcats kicked off their season with back to back weekend tournaments when they made the trip to Dayton and then South Bend to take part in the Dayton and Notre Dame Tournaments, where they went 3-3 in those six matches with big wins over Notre Dame, Bowling Green and Texas State. This week the Bearcats volleyball team is back in action after a week off as they prepare for the Crosstown rivalry match when they welcome the Xavier Musketeers to Fifth Third Arena this Thursday at 6:30 pm.
The Musketeers are sitting at 4-4 entering Thursdays match with the Bearcats, coming off a a match where they fell 0-3 to 10th ranked Louisville. The Musketeers are led by junior setter Carrigan O’Reilly, outside hitter Kelly Franxman, libero’s Stevie Wolf, Alyssa Overbeck, middle blocker Moriah Hopkins.
The Bearcats are coming off a season where they faced crosstown rival Xavier twice in the spring due to the pandemic and they split the series with the Musketeers. The first game of the series the Bearcats pulled out a 3 set to 1 victory propelled by now junior outside Maria Tobergte who finished with 13 kills, 21 digs where she led the Bearcats with 18 points. As well as now junior Kailea Carrier who also had 13 kills, tallying for 15 points for the Bearcats.
The Bearcats are coming in on a two match win streak after big wins versus Notre Dame and Bowling Green. Coach Alvey and the Bearcats are looking to keep the ball rolling and get two more wins from in state foes Xavier and Miami before kicking of conference play on September 24th when they travel to Florida for the weekend when they play USF on the 24th and UCF on the 26th.
The Bearcats are looking to continue their momentum as they welcome the rutkus back to Fifth Third Arena for the first time since 2019 this Thursday.
