The University of Cincinnati women’s basketball team fell on the road to Memphis, 66-54, on Wednesday night at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
Sophomore forward Malea Williams led the Bearcats with 12 points, going 5-for-10 from the field and shooting 50%. Junior guard Caitlyn Wilson added 11 points, five rebounds and four assists while freshman guard Braylyn Milton finished with five rebounds.
The Bearcats held the Tigers to 34% shooting, but Memphis shot 81% from the free throw line compared to UC’s 67%.
Cincinnati moves to 10-11 overall and 3-6 in conference play, while Memphis improves to 13-7 overall and 4-4 in the AAC.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first quarter got started with a Memphis 11-0 run that held the Bearcats scoreless until the 4:59 mark. Milton made a 3-point basket to break the run before back-to-back 3-pointers extended the Tigers lead to 17-5. The Bearcats would then go on a 7-0 run before Memphis ended the first quarter with an and-one layup to make the score 20-12.
The Bearcats went on a 16-4 run to start the second quarter, highlighted by Jillian Hayes’ layup that tied the game and free throws by both Arame Niang and Hayes to give the Bearcats their first lead of the game, 28-24. UC and Memphis would trade baskets back and forth and continue tying the game before the quarter ended with a Memphis layup to give the Tigers a 35-34 advantage at the half.
The third quarter would continue the back and forth scoring. Both teams were scoreless for 2:21 before Memphis’ two free throw shots broke the tie at 41-39. Memphis maintained the lead the rest of the third quarter.
Milton got the fourth quarter started with a 3-point jumper. Williams’ second chance jumper at the 5:45 mark kept the game to within three, 57-54. However, the Bearcats would go scoreless while Memphis went on a 9-0 run to close out the game.

The Bearcats have a bye weekend and will be back in action Wednesday, Feb. 9, when they welcome the SMU Mustangs to Fifth Third Arena for a 7 p.m. matchup.
