WBB: Musketeers strike first in the Crosstown Shootout, defeat the Bearcats 48-35

The Musketeers would lead 39-22 heading to the fourth behind 13 points from Courtney Prenger as she continued to be a problem for the Bearcats. However, the Bearcats knew they had to find some momentum quick as the Musketeers looked to close this one out and record their first victory over the Bearcats since 2017.

The Musketeers would extend their lead to 20 following a huge and-1 play from Frenada Ovalle and the Musketeer fans were on their feet at Cintas. However, the Bearcats wouldn’t shy away just yet as they sparked a five-point run following a Taziah Jenks made three pointer that would cut the Musketeer lead to just 14.

The Musketeers would hold on to defeat the Bearcats 48-35 as they capture their first win over the Bearcats since 2017 behind a dominant performance from Courtney Prenger, who finished with 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting. The Musketeers did a great job containing guard Mya Jackson who has played terrific at Cintas in the past but was held to just zero points on 0-of-13 from the field. The Musketeers dominated from the start after an early 7 point run in the first quarter, and they never looked back from there. The Musketeers held the Bearcats to just 18% from the field tonight which is their lowest shooting percentage of the season. However, the Bearcats did record a season high 13 steals in the loss. Jillian Hayes recorded her 4th double-double of the season as she finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

“I thought the energy was electric. The student section was going crazy from was going crazy, all the fans that came out to support tonight you could hear them and I thought they gave us fantastic energy,” said Musketeer head coach Melanie Moore.

The Musketeers now improve to 7-3 on the season, while the Bearcats fall to 5-5. The Bearcats will be back in action this Tuesday, when they travel to Athens, Ohio to take on the Ohio Bobcats.
