A former Cincinnati legend made history early Sunday morning.
Early Sunday morning, former Cincinnati All-American Jordan Thompson and Team USA captured a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics after falling to Italy three sets-to-zero. Thompson would lead The United States after scoring a team high eight points over three sets. This would end the United States hopes of potential back-to-back world championships despite their second-place finish.
It wasn’t an easy run for Team USA throughout this Olympics tournament after being paired up with Serbia and China in Pool play, which were two powerhouse programs heading into this summer’s Olympics. Although, Team USA was able to overcome adversity and power through to the gold medal match, they were able to come away with their seventh medal, the most by any country, as well as securing their fifth straight medal at the Olympic games.
Now for Thompson, she etches her name into history, as she becomes the first two-time Olympic medalist in Cincinnati history. Worth noting that Cincinnati Volleyball head coach Molly Alvey and assistant volleyball coach Phillip White, made the trek to Paris to watch Thompson etch her name into history.
Thompson became the seventh player across Division one volleyball to achieve fifty kills in a match in the Bearcats 3-2 victory over UConn back in 2019, which was the first time anyone has recorded fifty kills since 1999.
Also worth noting that the former Cincinnati standout was named to the 2024 James. P. Kelly UC Athletics Hall of Fame. Thompson was named the 2015 American Athletic Conference freshman of the year, where she then followed up a historic career by earning unanimous AAC Player of the year in 2016, 2018, 2019 as she missed time in 2017 due to injury. The former Cincinnati standout led the Bearcats to their first ever sweet 16 appearances in 2019 which included a historic upset of nationally ranked Pittsburgh in the round of 32.
