Before there was Kevin Kolb, there was Rob Johnson

In my younger years a lot of things stick out in my memories while watching sports. Like Jerome James getting paid after only a good game in a half against Tim Duncan, Neil O’Donnell putting Larry Brown on with two picks in the Super Bowl and countless other things.

The saying history repeats itself is very true. I know there has probably been somebody before Rob Johnson to pull off the one game miracle in get paid, but I probably was too young to remember or just plainly forgot.

Rob “Head Tie” Johnson had a great one game tryout while Mark Brunell was still recovering from an injury in 1997. In that game Johnson threw for 294 yards, 2 TDs on 20 of 24 passing, after riding the pine for a few years Johnson got his shot to show the world what he could do in took advantage. Because Brunell was the man back then ( I know hard to believe know as he can barely throw a 10 yard out but he was legit) the Jaguars capitalized on the QB market and traded him to the Bills in 1998 for that years 1st rd and 4th rd pick. Seemed like a good trade for the Bills who were looking to replace the great Jim Kelly. Johnson rode that one game in got the brinks truck sent to his house in the amount of 25 million dollars over 5 years. Johnson can think the Bills for providing him and his family financial stability but the Bills can thank him for setting their franchise back a few years to say the least. Johnson played for the Bills for 4 years and didn’t even come close to remotely leaving up to the picks and contract they gave him. After the Bills Johnson played for a few more teams but mainly as a backup but you get the point right?

Just when you think another Rob Johnson experiment won’t happen in the near future somebody proves you wrong. You think nobody can be baited into overpaying a QB after just a good game or two right? Wrong, just ask the Philadelphia Eagles. I guess when you are ready to replace a great QB you jump the gun when turning over the keys to a new owner.

Kevin Kolb is the new Rob Johnson for those that want to know or care to know. Kolb rode the pine for a few years then got a shot to play two games while McNabb was hurt in 2009, during those two games he lit the world on fire by throwing for more than 300 plus yards in both games. This two game outburst led to the Eagles trading McNabb to the Redskins and the Eagles giving Kolb a year extension worth 12.25 million. He was handed the starting role in Philly but in the 1st game he had a concussion, Mike Vick came in and balled out and the rest was history. Kolb played a game while Vick was hurt and did decent prompting the Cardinals who desperately needed a replacement for the retired Kurt Warner to trade for Kolb before the start of the 2011 season. The Cardinals gave up CB Dominque Rodgers-Cromartie and a 2nd round pick in the 2011 draft. The Cards also extended Kolb’s contract 5 years 63.5 million with 21 million guaranteed. Not bad for a player who only played a few games and two of them he stood out while replacing the normal starter.

Kolb is now struggling with injuries and quality play. He is currently in a battle with John Skelton for the starting role in Arizona. Good trade for the Cards right? *Crickets, crickets* Unless a miracle happens soon it is save to say Kolb is the new age Johnson. So if you seen any QB pull this move off you can safely say he is getting his Rob Johnson on. History repeats itself whether we like it or not, thank to the Cardinals for helping aid the repeat of history. Side note we will be watching Mr. Six Touchdown Flynn in Seattle closely to see if he proves everybody wrong or if he gets his Rob Johnson on also.
