Tony Gonzalez appreciation day

tonygAnthony “Tony” Davis Gonzalez left a 5% window that he may come back next season. If Tony decides to hang up the cleats he would go down as arguably the best tight end in history. Numbers back up how he has been able to change the position. He was the first hybrid tight end, which had a basketball background but flourished in football. Others have followed a similar path and have had success also (Antonio Gates and Jimmy Graham) but we need to show love to one of the forefathers of the game.

This year marked the first time Tony G won a playoff football game. During the NFC Championship game he made plays like a 26 year old not a person who is 36 years of age. If Tony wasn’t playing my favorite team in the Championship game I would’ve been all for him getting to the Super Bowl but the guy is a class act. Sometimes the cards fall like that so I had to hope Sunday was his last game. During the game my dad and granddad kept saying man he can play 2 or 3 more years if he wants to but you can understand why he wants to hang em up on top. It made perfect sense as I thought about it because when you are one of the best you don’t want the Ali or Roy Jones moments when you hold on too long and people don’t remember your greatness.

Tony G has been giving opposing defenses that work for 16 years. He leads in every major category for tight ends, he was a staple for the Pro Bowl and All Pro. Because of the markets he played in he wasn’t on our tv screens as much as he should’ve been but if you followed football you knew Tony wasn’t no joke no matter what type of team he played on.

Maybe that 5% bug will grow over the off season? Maybe it will die down who knows but we need to show this man some love off the strength he was a beast, no ifs, ands, or buts.
