Why Tyrann “Honey Badger” Can Become The Steal of the NFL Draft

tyrann mathieuThe last time we saw “Honey Badger” on the football field he was one of the top three players in College Football regardless of position. Since then Mathieu has been in the spotlight for all of the wrong reasons. We know that Mathieu has a love for Mary Jane, and has been in a drug rehab program in Houston, Texas. I don’t know if this is the same rehab where Michael Beasley of the Phoenix Suns went to, but I hope rehab does a better job for Mathieu than it did for Beasley.
The NFL Combine is where many display their talents as well as falter down draft boards. I am an avid watcher of the combine, but I feel that a lot of it is overrated. Workout warriors such as Vernon Gholston, Chris Henry (Running Back), Matt Jones, and Darius Heyward-Bey were all selected higher than what they should have been, and it has led to minimal results on the field or an earlier than expected departure from the NFL. Then you have those guys like Tom Brady, Anquan Boldin, and Ray Lewis who did not test or run well, but have been selected to countless All-Pro teams between the three as well as having Super Bowl rings.
Today Mathieu bench pressed 225 lbs a measly 4 times, but I feel that the game film on Mathieu should be the focus rather than bench reps and forty times. Everyone knows that Mathieu is going to fall in the draft due to his red flags, and I believe he is worth the gamble on draft day. Last season Janoris Jenkins had many issues entering the 2012 Draft, and ended up having a better season than Morris Claiborne and Dre Kirkpatrick who were selected way before him. I feel that Mathieu can make the same type of impact. I just hope someone is willing to take a chance on him rather than passing him up. Just make sure that the Broncos is not that team, because you know what is now legal in the state of Colorado.
