The 1st Round of the NFL Draft has become must see TV

2013-draft-logo-storyThursday night the NFL held the 2013 Draft 1st round, during the 2011 draft the NFL changed the format during the lockout season. The 2010 draft was a two day process, which I thought was cool but the new format gave the draft 3 days of air time and isolated the 1st round for prime time on Thursday nights.

When the lockout finally finished a long over due rookie salary cap was put in place. Everyone knew it was needed but what we didn’t know is that it would coincide so well with the 1st round of the draft moving to prime time.

The 1st round has been a track meet with a lot of wheeling and dealing because of the new found action I find myself not wanting to take my eyes off of the TV screen. There is always talk on what the next team is going to do, if they are going to move up or move back. The Dolphins, Rams, 49ers, Falcons and Vikings all moved up in the 1st round to draft a player. With reality TV as good as this who needs anything else right?

Besides the trades there are always the player or players who stay in the green room a lot longer than expected. This year the camera was following the Former West Virginia QB Geno Smith like a hawk. Geno was slated to be the 1st QB taken off of the board during all the mock drafts but it didn’t pan out as expected. Geno sat in the green room until Friday as he was drafted in the 2nd round by the Jets. I feel bad for the kid going there because that team is a damn train wreck.

With the story lines, trades and the bright lights of prime time the draft highlighting the first round of the draft has been one of the best moves the NFL has done.  Me, myself and I can’t say that I’m mad at this change.
