The Pros and Cons of the Kobe extension

kobe-bryant-returns-in-nike-kobe-i-prelude-02First off I want to say I’m a huge Kobe fan and I’ve damn near watched him play my whole basketball watching life. He’s one of the G.O.A.T’s in my eyes. Nobody can change this 80’s babies mind.

Ok, back to the topic or let’s get on topic the Lakers extended the great Kobe Bryant for 2 more years at $48.5 million. That’s a lot of coin for a 35 year old coming off of an achilles injury, but it is Kobe. I was shocked the deal was done before he played a game in the 2013-14 season, but after having an off season of minor turmoil you want to take care of your biggest star.

Pros of the deal

  • The deal is only 2 years so they are not buried for a life time.
  • They took care of a living legend that is a good look for stars that want to come to LA .
  • Now that Kobe is signed they can worry about resigning Gasol if they want to and catching the other big fish (cough, cough) Carmelo .
  • They still have enough room to offer a max deal to another star player

Cons of the deal

  • $48.5 million is a lot of money, I thought he’d take less to get more support around him. I pictured a Pierce type deal around $30-35 million for 2 years.
  • If they get a max player, will they be able to get a solid supporting cast?
  • Do we trust the achilles?

The great thing about this deal is that Kobe will suit up for the Lakers for a total of 20 years barring any set backs. I’m happy the Lakers locked up one of the greatest of our time, but at what cost?
