The Wes Welker Curse

Sunday night the curse of Wes Welker became pretty evident. Welker, who played in two Super Bowls with New England and one in Denver is now 0-3 in the big game. In the games with the Patriots Welker dropped two huge passes that could have pushed the Pats over the edge, or at least put them in position to win the game. If Welker wouldn’t have dropped those crucial passes historical Super Bowl moments by David Tyree and Mario Manningham wouldn’t have happened. Welker had 8 receptions for 84 yards. If you were to just look at the box score you would’ve thought that Welker played a good game.

Watching the game and looking at the box score is always two different animals. Welker’s 84 yards came when the game was way out of hand. The game was a testament of how people delusional stats can be.

In my opinion I believe that Wes Welker is one of the most overrated players in the NFL. On paper Welker can be perceived as great, but due to the systems he played in and with the NFL being a passing league his stats are beyond inflated. Welker has been blessed to play with Tom Brady and Peyton Manning in the prime of his career. Welker has over 840 receptions in his career, and this more than Michael Irvin, Lynn Swann, Steve Largent, and Shannon Sharpe. The names mentioned after Welker are all in the Hall of Fame, and it’s crazy to think that Welker’s numbers are better than those mentioned.

Welker is a slot receiver that plays between the hash marks. Welker does his damage against nickel cb’s and LB’s. Now Welker does present match up problems when in the slot, but he can be easily taken out of the game due to his lack of big play ability. Call me a hater or whatever, but Welker is not the player that the stats says he is. Jay-Z said “Men lie, women lie, but numbers don’t”, but in this case Welker’s numbers are a lie, and the curse is real.

  1. This is real, the main reason I never put Welker as a true number one. He can’t effect the game like a Johnson, Jones or Green type. The one big drop was more of a bad throw on golden boy Brady, but all in all the curse seems very real.
    Good post homie
