The San Francisco 49ers and the Jim Harbaugh Soap Opera

In recent news there have been multiple reports noting that head coach Jim Harbaugh is wearing out his welcome with the San Francisco 49ers. From the players to the owner and general manager there has been a few qualms about Harbaugh as head coach. In my humble opinion I feel that it is asinine to even think about replacing Harbaugh as the head coach.

Prior to Harbaugh arriving, Dennis Erickson, Mike Nolan, and Mike Singletary all failed in an attempt to bring back the glory days in San Francisco. In 48 regular season games, Harbaugh has a record of 36-11-1 not including an 5-3 record in the playoffs.  Comparing Harbaugh’s win/loss totals to the aforementioned coaches are complete blasphemy. In a total of 127 games– Singletary, Nolan, and Erickson won a combined 45 games (0 playoff wins). 127 games equal out to almost 8 seasons, and Harbaugh is will surpass that number by the end of the season in half of the time that they did.

Like most sports, football is a “what have you done for me lately” type of sport, and it seems as if Jed York and Trent Baalke have amnesia. York recently backed Harbaugh, but if you have been following the team, this has been an ongoing issue. From a coaching standpoint Harbaugh is tough on his players, but he gets the best out of them. Harbaugh has proven his worth, and rightfully so he wants more control of selecting the personnel for the team.

I feel that Trent Baalke should relinquish a portion of the role, and give Harbaugh some control with making decisions for the team. We’ve seen this story play out several times in the NFL, and often times it hasn’t ended well. Jimmy Johnson was ran out of Dallas after having issues with Jerry Jones, and the same could be said for Jon Gruden while he was in Oakland. Professional football are filled with grown men that are egotistical, but at times somebody has to be willing to compromise.

In this case, I feel that Harbaugh has a strong case to come back as the head coach of the 49ers, but I hope that ownership feels the same way. Sometimes people think the grass can be greener on the other side, and all the 49ers have to do is to take a look across the Bay, and look at a team that has been in total disarray since one of the best coaches they ever had left them. It’s time for the 49ers players, Jed York, and Trent Baalke to smarten up, because it doesn’t get any much better than Jim Harbaugh.

  1. Man, they act like before Harbaugh we were in the Steve Young era or something. They better chalk it up and keep winning. Jimmy Johnson and the Cowboys are a perfect example, the Cowboys haven’t been shit since… (they 4-1 right now) but you get my point. Man, we gonna let Jim go then what? who do we replace him with? It’s not like it’s Marvin Lewis on the hot seat for no reason.
