The New England Patriots shore up their linebacking core

With the season ending knee injury to star linebacker Jerod Mayo Week 6 the Patriots used the trade deadline as their friend. Hate them or love them they are always crafty when it comes to making moves to fill a need because of injury and you have to respect them for that.

The Pats acquired linebacker Akeem Ayers from the Tennessee Titans for a 6th round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. Ayers is a solid pro and for a 6th round pick it’s worth the risk to add depth to the LB core.

The Pats also acquired linebacker Jonathan Casillas and a 6th round pick in the 2015 draft from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a 5th round pick in the 2015 draft. These two moves help ease some of the pain, but they don’t replace Mayo.

Both moves are very low risk for the Patriots and they are known for making these types of moves. You have to respect the way they make moves when it comes to trading for need. I know they can cut ties quick on their star players, but when it comes to filling a void via trade the Patriots are one of the best in the business.
