IOC Votes for Change

Recently, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) gathered and voted to allow future cities and countries to submit bid proposal that would spread out the Olympic Games. This means host sites will be allowed to hold events in both the Summer and Winter Olympics outside the host city or country. This could lead to geographical collaborations by countries in the same region. Under the previous model almost all of the Olympic events where held in one centralized location.

The vote was passed in an effort to eliminate the upfront cost and economic burden of sites building and improving facilities that are no longer used after the Olympic Games have been hosted at that site. The new model could potentially allow sports like softball, baseball and karate to return to the Olympic platform. It could also allow for new sports to be added under the Olympic umbrella for future games. The goal of the new system is to make the bid process easier and more affordable.

Rio will be hosting the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. The 2016 Summer Olympics is set to features 28 sports and a total of 41 disciplines and 306 events. If I understand correctly this could be the last host site under the current centralized location model.
