Bearcats Smith Named Ray Guy Award Punter of the Week

I personally just wanted to say congrats to sophomore punter James Smith he was named the Ray Guy Award Punter of the Week. If you have been watching the Bearcats all season you know the sophomore has been a lethal weapon on a weekly basis.

University of Cincinnati punter James Smith (Wangaratta, Australia) was named the Ray Guy Award Punter of the Week, the Augusta Sports Council announced Wednesday.

Smith, a sophomore, punted five times against the Bulls, averaging 49.2 yards per kick with three kicks dropped inside the 20-yard line and long kicks of 64 and 51 yards. In the first half, he dropped three punts inside the USF 15-yard line placing them on the 15, 12 and 1, respectively.

On the season, UC leads the NCAA and American Athletic Conference in net punting, averaging 44.1 net yards per kick. Smith’s 46.6 yard average ranks No. 6 in the NCAA FBS and No. 2 in the American, half a yard behind Tulsa’s Thomas Bennett.

Smith has been tabbed for Ray’s 8, highlighting the best punters in college football each week, on five occasions in 2018.

The No. 24 University of Cincinnati football team heads out on the road for the final time in the regular season with a key American Athletic Conference East Division matchup at No. 11 UCF on Saturday. The Bearcats (9-1, 5-1 AAC) have won three straight and 10 of their last 11 games while the Knights are riding a 22-game winning streak, longest in the NCAA FBS, and a 13-game home winning streak. ESPN’s College Gameday will broadcast from Orlando on Saturday morning from 9 a.m. to noon while the Bearcats and Knights will kick off at 8 p.m. ET in a nationally-televised matchup on ABC with radio coverage on 700 WLW AM.
