Bearcats grind out win against Panthers, 74-63

The Cincinnati Bearcats welcomed the Milwaukee Panthers to Fifth Third Arena on Friday night. The Bearcats were looking to get their second win of the season. Justin Jenifer didn’t play because of a stomach virus so Cane Broome started in his place, also Keith Williams got his second start in a row at the guard position.

They started slow out the gates which is has been consistent the first three games in the season, the first 5:26 of the game Milwaukee had a 12-3 lead before the home team started to wake up and go on a 13-4 run to tie it up. Led by DeAndre Abram with seven points and Carson Warren-Newsome with eight points they were able to go into halftime tied at 33. Strong halves by Cane Broom with nine points, Tre Scott with eight points and Nysier Brooks with eight points kept the Bearcats afloat. Milwaukee shot 51.9% from the field and 50% from three in the first half something you aren’t seeing done to the Bearcats.

The second had a few flash played by the home team, a nice steal by Broome, to Jarron Cumberland who threw a nice oop to Keith Williams and after a missed three pointer Williams got it back for a monster one hand jam. With these nice plays they still only found themselves up two points with 11:20 left in the second half. Down one, Cumberland hit a three and a floater in between a Broome pull up jumper to help give a six point lead. Back to back dribble drives by Broome gave the Bearcats an 11 point lead they wouldn’t let go.

The Bearcats won 74-63, they had five people in double digits and two in double digits rebounding. Broome led the way with 17 points on 8-of-12 from the field, Cumberland had 14 points, Williams had 12 points, Scott had 15 points and Brooks had 12. Brooks and Scott both had 10 rebounds. Milwaukee shot 44.6% from the field for the game and the Cincinnati shot 50% from the field they won the rebounding battle 37-25. This wasn’t a pretty game, but they won by double digits and are now 2-1.

Next game will be Monday at Fifth Third Arena at 7 p.m. against Western Michigan.
