TFON speaks with OLB James Weatherspoon about UC offer

JS: Describe your feelings when you received that offer from UC and what this offer brings to you?

JW: When I received the UC offer I was honestly excited. This offer brings another opportunity to go to college, another school I can pick from when it’s time for me too narrow it down to the school I call my home after high school.

JS: What can you bring to a football program?

JW: I feel like I would be a great asset to a football program. I would bring nothing, but hard work, positive vibes and dedication. My mother always told me nothing comes easy, you have to work very hard for what you want.

JS: What have you been able to learn from the upperclassmen at your high school and how can that learning help you in the future?

JW: The upperclassmen at Jones taught me that nobody is perfect, when you make a mistake it’s not the end of the world. I know now that after a mistake I can find out what I did wrong, I can learn from it and prevent it from happening again.

JS: What do you feel you can improve on in your game?

JW: What I can improve on is my man coverage. My man coverage wasn’t the best this season, so man coverage will be what I will be working on improving. I want to be able to cover on an island if need be.

JS: What does the game of football mean to you?

JW: Football is where it all started for me, I started noticing my mom wasn’t doing too good she was in and out of the hospital. Football was like a way of letting out anger at one point and after my mom passed my 8th-grade year, I made a promise to myself that I will go far in life with football so that I can make sure that my dad is living good and give him everything I couldn’t give my mom. So, now I use football as motivation to do the right things and keep me out of trouble.

JS: What is your goal for this upcoming football year and how have you been keeping up with football stuff with Corona going on?

JW: My goal for this upcoming season is to honestly be the best possible player that I can be on and off the field. As for keeping up with football during Corona I do private workouts by myself working my upper and lower body. I also either go running or ride my bike!

JS: Do you have a favorite NFL player? If so, do why is that player your favorite?

JW: I would have to say that my favorite NFL player is Jalen Ramsey. He’s my favorite football player because I love the way he plays, he’s very aggressive and I feel like he’s the only corner in the league who can talk trash and back it up. I actually tried something he did in one of his highlights in a game and got a flag for it and my coach took me out the game for a couple of plays.

JS: Who has been the biggest influence for you in the football world? (meaning coaches, family, friends, etc)

JW: I would have to say my dad and my uncle. I remember like it was yesterday it was my very first football game I got hit so hard I came out the game and told coach don’t put me back in there and after the game, my dad and my uncle told me this is your first time nobody starts off good you have to work for it and after that my uncle and my dad came every practice and game cheering me on when I did good and helping me back up when I did bad.

JS: Before all this Corona stuff happened were you able to get to any football camps to help you with your game or do you plan on trying to go to any after all the Corona buzz dies down?

JW: I went to a Rivals camp before the corona stuff started I feel like I shouldn’t have gone because a couple of days before the camp I messed up my ankle, I iced it but it didn’t do too good when I was competing in the camp so I plan on going to other camps to showcase my talent and to show coaches that they didn’t make a mistake offering me.

JS: Uc football is among the top of recruiting for the 2021 class so far and with you being in the class of 2022 how do u feel about the coaching staff believing in you to potentially help continue the success of the program?

JW: The coaching staff believes in me is a great feeling because it makes me feel that they see something in me and they want me to bring it on campus to help their program.

JS: Have you been able to build any relationships with any of the UC coaches yet?

JW: I have gotten to speak with coach (Perry) Eliano the cornerbacks’ coach on the phone, but I wouldn’t say I have built a relationship with any of the coaches yet!

JS: If you had to choose a walkout song to run on the field too or just to describe your life, in general, what would it be?

JW: Places You’ll Go by Major Nine.
