Bearcats K Smith named Groza Award Star of the Week

Per GoBearcats:

University of Cincinnati K Cole Smith (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown) was named as one of the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award’s three Stars of the Week the Palm Beach County Sports Commission announced Monday.

Smith, who also earned a spot on the American Athletic Conference’s weekly honor roll, scored 12 points in the Bearcats 36-33 road win in the Bounce House, making field goals of 47, 26 and 22 yards and going 3-for-3 on PATs, setting career marks for points scored and field-goals made.

It was the first time UC made three field goals in a game since November of 2016. Smith’s 57 points rank second on the team in scoring and his efforts helped the Bearcat remain unbeaten while knocking off a UCF team which had won 23 of its last 24 home games.

College football’s top kicking award, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award presented by the Orange Bowl recognizes three of the top kickers each week from FBS division teams as the “Stars of the Week.”

The No. 7 Bearcats (8-0, 5-0 AAC) return to action this weekend, continuing three-game road swing at Temple on Saturday, Nov. 28. The game will kick off from Lincoln Financial Field at 4 p.m. ET on ESPNU and 700 WLW AM.

ABOUT THE LOU GROZA AWARD

The Award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou “The Toe” Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although an All-Pro offensive lineman as well, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.
