Leading into the 2023 season, a lot of Bearcats fans, myself included, were hoping just for the Bearcats to make a bowl game. First season in the Big 12, new head coach and coaching staff, massive roster overhaul and so many obstacles standing in the Bearcats way.
But after two games, it’s clear: this team is worthy of higher expectations. This team is worthy of receiving votes in the Top 25. This team has answered a lot of questions that we beat like a drum leading into the season.
It was one thing to clobber EKU 66-13 and rack up 667 yards in the process. But it’s another to go on the road and win a game where you were considerable underdogs. Not to mention, go on the road and beat a Power Five opponent.
Pittsburgh presented multiple problems, at least potential problems, for the Bearcats weaknesses. Pittsburgh came in with a very physical defensive front, causing concern for an unproven Bearcats offensive line. They also came in with an experienced secondary, issuing the new-look Bearcats receivers their first test of the season.
The Bearcats offensive line allowed just two sacks and helped pave the way for 216 rushing yards. Bearcats junior running back Corey Kiner rushed for 153 yards and a touchdown. It’s hometown heroes like Kiner who stayed through all the change in the offseason that are now playing large roles in the team’s early success. That’s what’s exciting to see. That’s what’s raising expectations.
