What we Learned in Week 4 of the NFL Season

It was great to see the beloved NFL referees back in the fold after their lockout. Week 4 did not disappoint, as there were several high and low moments of the football week. Feel free to chime in and comment on our selections if you like. Enjoy!

Tebow Time in New York? – The New York Jets were a total embarrassment against the San Francisco 49ers losing 34-0. Quarterback Mark Sanchez had a lot to do with the way the Jets played on the field. Sanchez completed less than 50% of his passes, and was a turnover machine. Is it time to call on Tebow? We shall see how Rex Ryan can manage this situation as Sanchez continues his horrid play.

Matty Ice lives up to his nickname– Matt Ryan has arguably been the best quarterback in the early part of the season. Ryan has looked like an elite quarterback while operating the no huddle offense. With the ball placed on his one yard line Ryan drove his team down the field that led to the game winning field goal. Well, I guess we don’t call him “Matty Ice” for nothing.

A.J. Green is the BEST young Wide Receiver– Young wide receivers such as  Julio Jones and Torrey Smith have been playing at a high level this season, but they do not come close to A.J. Green.  Green does not have the supporting cast that Jones and Smith has, and he continues to put up huge numbers week in and week out. The sky is the limit for Green and the Bengals they will only continue to get better as they continue to build their roster.

The Houston Texans are legit– I know that Texas have played a lot of powder puff teams, but undefeated is undefeated. The Texans are able to run the ball at will which makes their play action game even more dangerous with Andre Johnson on the outside, and the defense is ferocious despite losing Demeco Ryans and Mario Williams.

The Patriots are better when they run the ball– The Patriots became a finesse team when Bill Belichick acquired Randy Moss and Wes Welker in 2007. Since then they have continued that trend. During that time frame the lack of committing to the run put exposed their defense, and made them rely on Tom Brady more than they should. When the Patriots won their three Super Bowls Brady was more of a game manager rather than a gun slinger. I’m not saying he should be a game manager, but when you are able to run for a total of 247 yards they should put more emphasis on the running game.  By the Pats running the ball they can have time consuming drives which means that their suspect defense is not on the field as much. We don’t know if the Pats will continue to alter their game plan, but they should give it some thought since they haven’t hoisted the Vince Lombardi Trophy since 2005.
