What We Learned in Week 5 of the NFL Season

The NFL season has been very exciting thus far. Week in and week out there are great games to go along with some amazing storylines. Week 5 continued a great trend of great moments during the football week. Feel free to chime in and comment on our selections if you like. Enjoy!

Mark Sanchez is only becoming worse – The New York Jets lost again and the pressure is on Mark Sanchez. As of now Mark Sanchez’s completion percentage is looking worse than  Dwight Howard’s free throw percentage.  Is it time to call on Tebow? Rex Ryan & Co. will have some time to decide whether they will turn to Tebow or stick with Sanchez.

J.J. Watt for DPOY– I know it’s early in the season, but J.J. Watt is playing on  a different level as of now. Watt is the reason why the Texans let Mario Williams walk to Buffalo and it is showing that it was not a mistake. I feel that Watt will continue his stellar play this season. The sky is the limit for this young superstar.

The Patriots running game is here to stay– The Patriots ran the ball efficiently versus the Buffalo Bills last week, and they continued their trend this past week versus the Denver Broncos. The more the running game evolves the more dangerous Tom Brady becomes. I think that could be quite scary.

Percy Harvin is the TRUTH– Percy Harvin went off once again. Prior to the season Harvin wanted to be traded. Now that the Vikings are 4-1 and Harvin is having the best season of his career I have a pretty good feeling that he is a lot happier than he was compared to this past summer.  Whether its running for a touchdown, catching a touchdown, or returning a kickoff Harvin always finds his way to the end zone.

The Chicago Bears Defense is legit-The phrase “Age Aint Nothing But a Number” fits so well with the Chicago Bears. Aging players such as Lance Briggs, Charles Tillman, and Brian Urlacher have been criticized for their age, but that seems not to bother them. I know the Bears played the “Bad News Bears” (Jacksonville Jags), but the defense did not disappoint.  For consecutive weeks the Bears defense found themselves in the opposing teams end zone. We shall see if the Bears can continue their stellar play.

The 49ers can open the playbook– This is a biased selection here, but I was curious to know why the Niners weren’t using all of their talent on the perimeter this season. This week the game plan switched and Alex Smith picked apart the Bills secondary. Long touchdown passes to Vernon Davis, Michael Crabtree, and Kyle Williams (yes, that Kyle Williams) were surprising to see. Combing a passing threat to the dominating ground game will only make the Niners more potent. With over 600 total yards against the Bills it shows that the offense can be as unstoppable as the defense.

Cam Newton or Scam Newton? The sophomore jinx is upon Cam Newton. Newton played awful versus a tough Seahawks defense.Though Newton didn’t have any turnovers he didn’t make enough plays to give his team a valid chance to win the game.  As the running game improves I think Newton will get back to his consistent play, until then there will be no more Superman dances in the end zone.

The Saints have a pulse– Drew Brees and the Saints were about as desperate as a Basketball Wife for a victory, and they did just that by beating that San Diego Chargers. I don’t know if the Saints will make the playoffs due to a tragic running game and swiss cheese defense, but when No. 9 is your quarterback there is always a chance. The Saints aren’t just dead as of yet!
