Did the Reds overpay for Homer?

First off, Homer Bailey,I want to say congrats on getting paid. Ok, now I won’t feel guilty about my mini rant.

The Reds signed pitcher Homer Bailey to a 6-year deal worth $105 million, with a mutual option for a 7th year. I know like most baseball contracts of this magnitude it will be back loaded and paid past the six year period, but did they pay too much?

Bailey has been highly touted since the Reds drafted him. He has ace potential, but so far has only been a middle to back of the rotation guy. He has had stretches where he looks like he may be ready to live up to the hype and he has had some where he looks like a journeyman.

I personally thought Bailey would get around $8-12 million per year, not the $17.5 million per year the Reds shelled out. Pitchers do get paid, but I personally didn’t see this amount coming.

Bailey has a career record of 49-45 with a 4.25 ERA. Last season he was 11-12 with a 3.49 ERA and pitched a no hitter. He has had two no hitters over the last two seasons and pitched the gem of a game versus the Giants at home during the 2012 playoffs.

Bailey is only 27 years of age, so I guess the time to invest in him is now right? This could either be a very good move or a terrible one only time will tell, but as of right now the Reds have overpaid in my humble opinion.

Do you agree? Disagree?

  1. Homer Bailey isn’t along the lines of young pitchers who got paid this off season. Kershaw and Julio Tehran. Both guys are young and proven. Bailey still is unrealiable. Not a good deal.

    1. Totally agree, the Reds are banking on potential. Personally I rather have Garza for 3 yrs 42 million. I would’ve have gave him more than 60 for 6 years. How much we gonna pay Cueto and Latos? They both are better pitchers than Bailey smh.
