Gem City Slam hosts Charity Game on March 16 at Belmont High School

a1779094_795729227107702_528442004_nThe Gem City Slam invites you to join them on March 16, 2014 at 6 p.m. at the beautifully renovated Belmont High School gym to help support Armando Mallory.  Armando, a 15 year old sophomore at Vandalia Butler High School, is battling cerebral palsy and is in desperate need of a van with a ramp and lift for his wheelchair.  As he’s grown, transporting him to school, doctor’s appointments, and to the basketball games that he loves watching has become a challenge for his family.  His mom struggles to get him in and out of the car so that he can participate in activities and be a part of his community.  Armando competes yearly in the Wheelchair Olympics, and just won a medal for bowling in the February 2014 Special Olympics Ohio, Greater Dayton.

Dayton’s own Gem City Slam, in the Eastern Division of the UBA, is currently ranked #1 nationally in the Universal Basketball Association.  Who could have guessed that a newly created team in a small city, as Dayton, would take the league by storm; but with several NCAA Champions on their roster, there was no doubt that the games would be exhilarating.  David Herzog, General Manager of the Slam, not only has a talented roster, but his coach, Travis McAvene is the GM of the 2014 USA Jones Cup Men’s National Basketball Team which competes for the Jones Cup in Taiwan in August, and the Mitchell Cup in the Dominican Republic in September. This prestigious team competes against the world’s Olympic National Teams.

At the Armando Mallory benefit game, the Gem City Slam will host the southern Indiana Generals at Belmont High School, a team they previously defeated on The Generals’ own grounds in Indiana. The evening will be packed with fun as the beautiful Dayton Babes have come on board to cheer for the Slam and entertain the crowd.  After the game, they will be signing their newly released calendar for fans. The Invincible Regulating Striders Drum Corps and Drill Team will also be performing during the half time show.  To encourage fan participation, The Funny Bone and Hooters will be providing giveaways.

For more information on how to donate, you may contact Sandy Rackley (937) 304-6197.  A benefit fund has been set up at Universal 1 Credit Union in Vandalia, but you may donate at any Universal 1 location or come out to support not only Dayton’s premiere Minor League basketball team, but also Armando, one of the most endearing treasures in Dayton.
